Landscape gardening business
Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog. How are you all? Thanks for your continuing interest and feedback. I have learnt a lot from your responses and I hope that you have learnt a lot from me too! I am striving to create a blog that is informative, interesting and a place that people feel comfortable expressing their concerns and ideas so please let me know if you feel there are any things I may have missed or that you want me to cover.
So for today’s bog entry I thought that I would talk to you about my recent business venture. I am trying to strive to create a business for myself. I have spent many years of my life stuck in an office for 10 hours a day listening to someone tell me how to do a job that they don’t know how to do themselves. Well, I couldn’t take it anymore so I left. It was a scary prospect at first, leaving something you have invested all of your time in for so many years. Initially I was very overwhelmed and really wasn’t sure where I was headed next. After having a break though and giving myself time to think I realised that I couldn’t be in a better position. I finally had the opportunity to think for myself and do things that genuinely make me happy. I have tried my hand at several things since I left and it has been so much fun exploring new pathways but I am still trying to find that one thing that really works for me and that I can see as part of my future.
How it all began...
So, one of the things I have always loved to do is gardening. Since I was a kid I have always loved being outdoors and getting my hands dirty. I love growing my own vegetables and fruit trees and creating an environment that people enjoy. My own garden features a patio area in the middle of the lawn with lots of flowers and trees around it. I thought that this would be more unusual than just having the patio at the front or the end of the garden as tradition dictates. All of my family and friends were really impressed with what I created and they have all asked me if I would consider redesigning their gardens too. So this got me to thinking, why don’t I start a business as a landscape gardener?? I would have enough business from people I know to begin with and then once I had proved that I could do a good job word of mouth would do the rest for me. Advertising and marketing further down the line may also come into play but that is something to think about once I become established.
So, my first objective was to create some sort of business model which would relay exactly what I plan to do and what the work would entail. I would need to work out exactly how much money I require as outlay and how to work out all of my costing. I have a friend who works in financing who helped me with all of the facts and figures so that I now have a solid idea of what exactly it is I will be doing and what I want to achieve. This will ensure that I manage my time and money more wisely and will create a more professional platform to start my business from.
So the next task is to start sourcing some materials and equipment that I need. After speaking to some friends who work in building and trading industries they suggested trying a site called http://www.flymo.com. This site seemed popular and reliable so I decided to buy a lawn mower from here as I know that I can guarantee its quality and will be covered under warranty for several years if anything happens to it.
In regards to smaller pieces of equipment though I want to keep my options open, partly because I need to be aware of how much I am spending and also because these items don’t necessarily need to be brand new as long as they are in good condition. One thing that I have been looking for in particular is a hedge trimmer. I found one site that had a hedge trimmer for sale in very good condition and also very reasonable priced. I decided to buy this item as I really didn’t think I would find a hedge trimmer for sale that could compete with this one from anywhere else.
There are still a lot of other items I need to buy though so I will let you guys know how I get on sourcing more products in the next few weeks!
Alot to think about...
There is obviously a lot to think about but I am really excited to give this ago. I think this time I have really found something that can work. I will be doing something I enjoy, that I am good at, and that gives me the flexibility to do other things. Ultimately I want to create a business that gives me freedom, to meet new people and explore new places whether that is within the job itself or because the job gives me the freedom to do what I want. Spending more quality time with my family is perhaps the biggest motivation here, whilst also creating something that could eventually become a family business that we can all be proud of!
